The Department of Agriculture has earmarked P75 million this year to start an urban gardening program using Israel’s greenhouse technology. Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol calls the project Vegetable Gardens in the City. Under the project, the department will partner with local governments and tap urban poor families. Piñol said the initial target areas are Taguig, the bailiwick of President Rodrigo Duterte’s running mate, Manila, and Quezon City. Piñol said government will also encourage backyard vegetable gardening in both rural and urban areas, with the department providing technical, financial, and marketing support.
